Stewart Cox, 101, of Syracuse, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012 at home. He was born on March 29, 1911, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Reverend Charles and Henry Cox. Stewart grew up in Taunton at the “Old Home Place.” He married Laura Fay in June of 1935, lived on Bellevue Avenue and moved to the “Farm” on Bussey Road in 1957.
Stewart worked for Casper Motors, Strickland Pontiac, Sleeth Pontiac, and Koerner Ford. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Taunton Fire Department. Stewart enjoyed his yearly fishing trips (since 1946) to Canada with family. He was active and enjoyed working with his sons on the dairy farm through his 1990s.
Stewart was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Laura Fay; son Ronald Cox; grandson Billy Ray Cox; and great-grandson Anthony Cox.
Surviving are his children Fay Felty (Al), Stewart (Gail) Cox, Charles (Louise) Cox, and Thomas (Kris) Cox; daughter-in-law Sherry Cox; 23 grandchildren and 51 great-grandchildren.
Calling hours: 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7 at Ryan Funeral Home, Marcellus. Funeral service: 10 a.m. Saturday Sept. 8 at the funeral home. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Syracuse. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Taunton Memorial Presbyterian Church or Hospice of CNY.
