Michele A. Gafrancesco, 90, of Liverpool, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012, at his home with his family by his side. Born in Syracuse, Michele was very proud of being raised at the House of Providence Orphanage. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII serving in the Pacific Theater on the USS Hutchins DD-476 as a gunner’s mate. Michele was an employee of the Swift Co., retiring after 33 years. He attended many Navy reunions, all over the country, spending time with former shipmates. Michele enjoyed playing baseball in his younger years and was semi pro, aspiring to play for the NY Yankees, until joining the Navy. He was an avid artist, and did many paintings during retirement, winning many awards, and had several paintings on display at the Everson Museum and the Delavan Center. Michele was an avid SU sports fan, outdoorsman (especially fishing), and was also a winemaker. He also enjoyed playing the accordion and harmonica. He was a member of Liverpool Elks Lodge No. 2348 BPOE, former Scoutmaster, and a longtime member of Pioneer Horseshoe Club. He was also a long time active member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Liverpool, but mostly enjoyed spending time with family and friends whom he loved very much. He is predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Anna Marie, who died in 2005; brothers, Joseph and Carmen; and sister, Theresa Ciotti-Mayer.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his children, Michael (Patricia) Gafrancesco; Thomas Gafrancesco; Charles Gafrancesco (Deanna Schilling); Patricia (Richard) Hammond; brother, John French; sisters, Mary Palmieri and Toni More; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins. beloved caregiver, Kathy Ruhn.
Funeral services: 9:15 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at Maurer Funeral Home, and at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church with a mass of Christian burial celebrated. Rite of committal and burial is in Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Calling hours: 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at the funeral home, 300 Second St., Liverpool. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Michele’s name may be made to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, 333 South Seton Ave., Emmitsburg, MD 21727 or to Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 425 Beechwood Ave., Liverpool 13088. The family wishes to thank everyone who prayed for dad, and was instrumental in helping dad remain in his home through the later years of his life.
