Edward J. “Grandpa Eddie” Manuel, 89, of North Syracuse, passed away Wednesday morning, Nov. 14, 2012, at Francis House. He was born in Syracuse and had been a resident of North Syracuse since 1953.
He retired after 42 years as an expediter for Carrier Corporation.
Ed served in the Signal Corps of the U.S. Army during WWII, seeing action at Bismarck, Archipelago, Luzon, New Guinea and the Southern Philippines. His decorations include the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Philippines Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Stars and the World War II Victory Medal.
He was predeceased by his wife Helen Manuel in 1988, son Donald E. Manuel on July 27, 2012 and his sisters Anne Carr and Helen Ducar.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his daughter-in-law Jackie Manuel, granddaughter, Kelly Rutherford, grandson, Richard “R.J.” Manuel (Katie Christman), great-granddaughter Riley Addison Rutherford (and her father Kenneth Rutherford), Jackie’s sister and husband Kim and Randy Kopp, their children and their families. Several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the volunteers, caregivers and Hospice staff for the loving care Ed received while at Francis House.
In the 59 years Grandpa Eddie lived in North Syracuse he made lifelong lasting relationships with the area businesses and his many neighbors, the family wishes to express heartfelt appreciation to all of you.
Calling hours: 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 19, at St. Margaret’s Church, 203 Roxboro Road, Mattydale, followed by a mass of Christian burial. Rite of Committal and burial along with military honors will be in North Syracuse Cemetery.
