Dr. James F. Collins, 87 of Fayetteville and Fort Lauderdale, FL, passed away on Monday, Nov. 12, 2012, surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 16, 1925 in Potsdam, N.Y., to Daniel and Katherine Collins. Jim attended college at SUNY Potsdam where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education. After teaching high school mathematics he continued his formal education at Syracuse University where he received his doctorate in education.
Jim began his higher education career as a faculty member at the University of Maryland. While there he was awarded a $5 million federal grant that led to the creation of “Teaching Centers” that eventually spread across the nation. He received state and national recognition for these centers, including the prestigious “Outstanding Program” by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. He worked tirelessly to improve student achievement through the professional development of quality teachers. He made many presentations at state and national conferences and was highly regarded by his peers. He was an active member of the National Association of Teacher Educators and was elected and served a term as president of the organization.
Jim returned to Syracuse University in the 1970s as assistant dean of education. Through continued federal grants he developed and became the director of the National Council of States for In-service Education where he worked with the chief officer of each state in a continuing effort to improve education on a national level. After retiring from Syracuse University in the 1990s he joined the faculty and administration at the Abraham S. Fischler School of Education at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Jim was predeceased by his parents, his brother John and sister Jane Collins. Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife of 50 years, Dr. Mary Lynn Collins, and children Daniel Collins and fiancé Peggy Nugent of New York City, Catherine (Marco Bona of Tampa, Fla., James (Melissa) Collins of Syracuse, Mary Lynn (John) Callanan of Tarrytown, N.Y., Robert (Susan) Collins of Washington, DC, and Maureen (Jonathan) Novaco of Gladstone, NJ; his sisters Mary Bailey of Potsdam, N.Y., Martha (John) Snell of Higley Falls, N.Y., and his brother Daniel of Washington, DC; and 10 grandchildren who will dearly miss their “Pop-Pop” as well as many cousins.
