Patricia W. “Patty” Kerwin, 52, of Manlius, a woman of boundless energy, unexcelled love of family and immeasurable generosity, lost her life and the courageous battle with metastatic breast cancer on Saturday, May 12, 2012. Patty, the daughter of Jerry and Jackie Walker of Hornell, N.Y., was born on Dec. 13, 1959, and graduated as an honor student from Hornell High School in 1978.
She attended SUNY Binghamton School of Management, receiving a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1982. She was employed by KPMG in the audit practice. She transferred to the tax practice in 1984, was promoted to manager in 1986, senior manager in 1988, managing director of the upstate practice in 1999, and was named partner in 2007. She served banks, consumer and industrial companies as her clients and led national and statewide tax trainings. She was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the New York State Society of CPA’s (NYSSCPA).
Patty was also involved in civic and charitable causes through KPMG’s Involve Program and within her local community and schools. She was a board member of the FM Sports Booster Club, a volunteer at the Samaritan Center and served as a room parent at the school. She was a literacy volunteer for the past three years. She has been a pace-setter for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, with her team “Bosom Buddies”.
She was an avid fan of Syracuse University basketball and football, and enjoyed attending her sons’ many sporting events and activities. She enjoyed skiing, golf and hiking in the woods with her black lab, Chelsea.
Patty is survived by her husband, Michael J. Kerwin; two sons, Daniel J. Marnell of Rochester and Christopher G. Marnell of Manlius; three stepchildren, Ryan K. Kerwin of Kailua, Hawaii, Michael J. Kerwin Jr. of Rye, N.Y. and Mary Kate Kerwin of Camillus; her parents, Jerry and Jackie Walker of Hornell; two sisters, Teri (Joseph) Mauro of Hornell and Nancy (Bill) Stewart of Cobleskill, N.Y. and two brothers, John (Kathy) Walker of Brookfield, WI, and Brian (Bridget) Walker of Henrietta, N.Y., as well as 31 nieces and nephews and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
