Evelyn A. Root
unknown - May 9, 2012
Evelyn A. Root, 96, of Syracuse, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at Loretto. Born in Bellefonte, Pa, on Saturday, May 29, 1915, she was the daughter of David Victor Steele and Bertha Mae shook Steele. The tenth of eleven children, she had six sisters and four brothers. She lived in Tyrone, Pennsylvania for 19 years until moving to Syracuse in 1938. Evelyn retired from Continental Can Co. after 20 years. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church and the Senior Citizens Acting Troupe.
Evelyn had many interests. As a young girl, she was an avid reader, having enjoyed murder mysteries, word searches and crossword puzzles and she continued to read the daily newspaper well into her 90s. She also enjoyed playing cards, particularly pinochle and pitch. Other interests of hers included cooking and walking. She would often go on foot for ten to fifteen blocks and think nothing of it. After a dear friend of hers passed away about 10 years ago, she raised cockatiel birds to keep herself busy.
Evelyn was predeceased by six sisters and four brothers; and her grandson, Eric.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Elana Joanne and David Doty Sr. of Mattydale; grandsons, David (Rachel) Doty Jr. and Steven Doty; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Relatives and friends called Saturday, May 12, at Grace Baptist Church, 423 Valley Dr., Syracuse. Services followed at 10 a.m. at church with Rev. Gary C. Welling officiating. Evelyn was laid to rest in White Chapel Memory Gardens, DeWitt. Arrangements were by the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus.
