Thomas A. McMahon, 82, died at home in Baldwinsville, NY, on Sunday, March 11, 2012, surrounded by his family. He was a man of faith and integrity, who was focused on his family, his church and his community. Born on October 18, 1929, in Phoenix, NY, to George and Beatrice Caines McMahon, Tom graduated from Baldwinsville Academy in 1947.
He worked from the age of twelve in his father’s store, McMahon’s Auto Supply, located at the four corners of Baldwinsville. Shortly after marrying his wife, Shirley in 1953, Tom relocated to Moravia, NY, where he opened McMahon’s Variety Store. After moving his family back in 1963, he founded and operated a series of Baldwinsville-based businesses for the next 30 years, including McMahon-Smith Real Estate, Tom McMahon Realty and McMahon Appraisal Services. He was named president of the Greater Syracuse Board of Realtors in 1975.
Tom was a faithful worshipper at the Baldwinsville First United Methodist Church for nearly 50 years, where he served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, as well as on the Finance Committee, the Administrative Board and the Staff-Parish Relations Committee.
He was an active member of the United Methodist Men, and played leadership roles on the Riverview Cemetery Board of Trustees, Lions Club, Rotary Club and Boy Scout Troop 71. From 1998 until he was diagnosed with cancer in 2009, Tom was a volunteer driver for the “B’ville Express” Senior Transportation Program of the Baldwinsville Volunteer Center.
Tom is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shirley Foster McMahon; sister-in-law, Joan Kisselstein Foster; sons Andy (Janet) of Colorado Springs, CO; Tim (Sally) and Steve (Claire), both of Baldwinsville; and grandchildren Michael of Graham, TX; Amy of Ft. Collins, CO; and Holly, Jackson, Amanda, Claire, Eliza and Catherine, all of Baldwinsville.
Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 15, in Gates Funeral Home at 29 West Genesee St. in Baldwinsville. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, March 16, at Baldwinsville First United Methodist Church. Private burial will be in Riverview Cemetery in Baldwinsville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the Baldwinsville First United Methodist Church or the Baldwinsville Community Food Pantry, both at 17 West Genesee St., Baldwinsville, NY, 13027.
