Richard A. Planer

Richard A. Planer, 80, of Syracuse, passed away Monday, May 28, 2012, at University Hospital due to complications from a recent automobile accident. Born in Syracuse on Dec. 1, 1931, he was the son of Charles P. Planer and Jessica A. Kirby Planer.
Richard will be remembered for his years of service as Commissioner of Parks and Recreation for the City of Syracuse. He was a 1949 graduate of Marcellus High School and later returned as an educator and chairman of the social studies department.
A veteran of the Korean War, Richard was a graduate of Syracuse University Maxwell School. He was a faculty member and administrator at Onondaga Community College and Syracuse University. He was on the board of directors with the Syracuse SkyChiefs, WCNY-TV, and many other public agencies during his career.
Surviving are his niece, Kathleen A. (Ron) Owen of Baldwinsville; nephew, Charles K. (Margaret) Planer Jr. of Onondaga; a great-niece and three great-nephews and their children.
