Marie J. (Caramella) Kowalewski, 78, of Syracuse, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 21, 2012, at home with her family by her side. Born in Rome, N.Y. on Saturday, Feb. 3, 1934, she lived in Rome until moving to Syracuse in 1967. She was a 1951 graduate of Rome Free Academy.
Marie enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was gentle and kind, completely devoted to her family, providing unconditional care and love. She was formerly employed at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, New York, Syracuse City School District at Frazer School as a teacher’s assistant in kindergarten (known as Miss Marie), and her ever-helpful and thoughtful ways will be dearly missed by customers and co-workers at Rite Aid, where Marie worked for many years.
Marie was predeceased by her parents, Angelo and Mary (Donato) Caramella; and brother, Pascal “Pat” Caramella.
Surviving are her husband of 49 years, Alexander “Alex”; daughter, Rose Kowalewski of Syracuse; sisters, Caroline Izzo, Amelia Granieri and Barbara Caramella, all of Rome, New York; sister-in-law, Carole Kowalewski of Riverside, California; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Relatives and friends called from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 24, at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus. Rev. Paul F. Angelicchio celebrated a funeral mass at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 25, in St. John the Baptist Church, 200 E. Dominick St., Rome, New York. Marie was laid to rest in St. John's Cemetery, Rome.
