Eileen M. McShane, 85, of Liverpool, died Sunday, July 8, 2012, at Loretto Fahey Nursing Home. Eileen was a native of Syracuse and was the daughter of the late Bernard J. and Mary E. (Flanagan) McShane.
Eileen was a 1947 graduate of Central High in Syracuse. She attended Syracuse Dog Trimming School in Syracuse and Bennett Dog Obedience Training School during 1948 when she began her work with animals. Eileen ran her own kennel in Canastota for 25 years and started judging obedience and conformation in canine matches. Over time, she became aware of the canine overpopulation and entered Animal Control and Animal Welfare fields for several companies including: Town of Lenox Dog Control, Madison County Dog Control, and finally with the NYS Humane Law Enforcement ASPCA where she served as the Director until retiring in 1986. Eileen was a founder of the Oneida Valley Kennel Club and Canine Board of Education. She was a member of the Humane Society, the National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors, the American Federation of Police and the National Animal Control Association. Eileen was the founder and President of the Animal Rescue Care of Madison County and surrounding areas, Vice President for the council on Pet Education and for the CNY Dog Warden Association. She served as President of the Western Dog Warden Association and the NYS Humane Association, where she was the first female president in each organization. In 1978, Eileen received the Humane Award from the ASPCA. Eileen later became a CSJ Associate participating in the mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet serving at St. Peter's Church in Rome.
In addition to her parents, Eileen was predeceased by her brother, Bernard McShane, Jr. Surviving are several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and many friends including April Stone and her family.
