Joanne M. Henderson, 70, of North Syracuse, died on Monday, Jan. 23, 2012. Daughter of the late Ralph and Marcella Lucas, she was born Feb. 6, 1941. She graduated from Groton High School and attended SUNY Buffalo, from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary and special education.
Joanne began her teaching career in the Ithaca School District, and later taught special education self contained classes for Oswego County BOCES. She concluded her teaching career with the North Syracuse Central School District, from which she retired.
Joanne was a communicant of St. Margaret's Church where she was a lay minister and taught CCD classes.
Joanne is survived by Allen, her husband of 47 years; her sister, Marianne (Paul) Corser and brother, John (Leah) Lucas; along with several nieces and nephews.
A completely devoted and proud mother, she is also survived by her children, Scott (Lisa) Henderson of Huntersville, NC and Beth (Ron) Napiorkowski of Liverpool. Her grandchildren were the joy of Joanne's life. She loved Sean and Sara Henderson and Anna and Nathan Napiorkowski with a passion reserved for special grandmothers. And she was special.
Joanne was a survivor of many illnesses, hospitalizations and operations. She battled this latest disease with courage and dignity.
Joanne Henderson was a warm and caring lady. She loved her family deeply. We love you, Joanne; wife, mom, grandma, sister and friend. We will cherish our memories of you forever.
Services: 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at Fergerson Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. at St. Margaret's Church, Mattydale. Private burial will be in St. Anthony's Cemetery, Groton. Calling hours: 2 to 5 p.m. Friday, 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, 215 South Main Street, North Syracuse.
