Robert A. “Dick” Bird, 88, of Manlius, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012. Born in Detroit, MI, he was a graduate of Cooley High School in Detroit, MI and the Naval Academy in Annapolis MD, he received his masters from MIT. Dick served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and the Korean War and retired as an engineering duty officer in 1965. Following, he worked at General Electric as an engineer retiring in 1983. During his retirement he served in various public offices with the town of Manlius. Dick enjoyed landscape construction, walking his dogs, observing the construction of new building projects and was able to take the trip of a lifetime when he went to the South Pole. He will be remembered as a straightforward, thoughtful man who loved his wife and family. He was predeceased by his wife, Eileen W. Bird and his daughter, Robin E. Bird.
Survivors: five daughters, Carolyn (Clark) Davis, Barbara (Michael) Luxenburg, Roberta Cagle, Lynn Thomas, Wendy (Tom) Beames; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 13, at the Newell-Fay Manlius Chapel. Burial will be in Manlius Cemetery. Calling hours: 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, at the funeral home, 8171 Cazenovia Rd.
