William G. Russell
unknown - February 19, 2012
William G. Russell, born March 25, 1924 in Belfast, Ireland, passed away Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012. He came to the U.S. in 1955, married Ruth and inherited a 16-year-old stepson. He had no children of his own, but was father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a wonderful uncle. With a blended family, there were always grandchildren around; every one of them called him grandpa and they all belonged to him.
Above all, he became the grand patriarch of the family. He walked nieces down the aisle, taught us how to buy cars (where we felt sorry for the salesman), taught his daughter-in-law about woodworking and taught everyone about the dignity of living and life.
He was a very gentle and kind man who never swore and always saw the best in people. He loved dogs. He and Ruth trained several Guiding Eyes Puppies. He also made sure that all of his grandchildren knew the importance of dogs in our lives.
On the other side, he didn't hesitate to voice his opinion, and with his Irish sense of humor, you never knew what to expect. He never lost his Irish brogue after all the years of living in the U.S. and he was ever-so-patient with us when we didn't know what he was saying.
He was a craftsman; both in his trade as a toolmaker and as an expert woodworker. He made kitchen cabinets as well as furniture and we will always cherish the Shamrock clocks that he made for us.
Above all, he was a patient and loving man who will be dearly missed.
Private services and burial were held Tuesday, Feb. 21. Donations may be made, in lieu of flowers, to Guiding Eyes for the Blind, 611 Granite Springs Road, Yorktown Heights, NY 10598
