Rudy Benfey of Liverpool, died suddenly on Monday, Feb. 20, 2012. Born in Berlin, Germany, on Dec. 4, 1927, he and his family immigrated to the United States in 1939. Rudy graduated from the Cambridge School of Weston, MA, and Yale University. He achieved a degree in electrical engineering.
Rudy worked for General Electric from 1947 to 1952 and 1955 to 1989. During the early 5190s, he served in the U.S. Air Force as a technical intelligence officer, collecting and analyzing Soviet activities in guided missiles and electronics. He was stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany, for three years where he met and married Agnes O’Connor.
At GE, Rudy was manager of systems engineering and proposal manager of radar systems. He also led the proposal for an Australian Over-the-Horizon Radar in Sidney, prior to his retirement in 1989. Since then, he has been active with the GE Elfun Society and as a tutor at The Newland Center, previously The Learning Place.
In Addition to his wife, Rudy is survived by four children: Edward of Southampton, N.Y., Louise of Liverpool, David and his wife Kathy of Rome, and Peter and his wife Alice of Saratoga Springs, N.Y. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Eric and Kelly Benfey and Katie Loughmiller.
Calling hour: 1 to 2 p.m. with a service at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, at the Maurer Funeral Home, 300 Second St., Liverpool. Burial will be in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery.
