Helen M. Swan, 84, longtime resident of Garden City Drive in Mattydale, died Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2012, at University Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Edward and Frances M. (Allen) Van Alstine.
Helen attended the North Syracuse School district until she had to leave in order to work and assist in supporting her family and caring for her younger siblings. Helen was very family oriented. She loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren and was known for her kind heart. Helen enjoyed traveling to Canada to camp and fish and always had a hidden stash of peppermints with her. She attended Calvary Bible Baptist Church in Elbridge.
In addition to her parents, Helen was predeceased by her sister, Eileen Kilorn. Surviving are her eleven children: William Swan of New Port Richey, FL, Eileen Haggen of MN, Kathleen Swan of Syracuse, Edward Swan of Charlotte, NC, Eric Swan of Norfolk, VA, David Swan of Mattydale, Sharon Nemier of Weedsport, Daniel Swan of Pensacola, FL, John Swan of Camillus, Doreen Harzallah of Weedsport, and Michael Swan of Syracuse; four siblings: Edward Van Alstine , Dorothy Spinella, both of Mattydale, Dolores Walker of Saratoga Springs, and Viola Hendricks of Liverpool; twenty grandchildren; her one great granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
