Leona Krueger

unknown - February 1, 2012

Leona "Lee" J. (Benedict) Krueger, 86, of Malta House in North Syracuse, passed away the morning of Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012, at St. Joseph's Hospital following an accidental fall at home. Her family was by her side as she went to be with her Lord peacefully leaving a full and fruitful life behind her. Leona, known to her friends as "Lee." was a native of Groton and was the daughter of the late C. Roy and Maude (Smith) Benedict.
She married the love of her life Ewald "Ed" Krueger while he was on leave from the Marine Corps. In 1953 they opened the Leitten-Krueger Funeral Home in Mattydale, and then in 1964, they purchased and moved into the Alma Motel. They relocated the funeral business as the Krueger Funeral Home to their former residence next door. Together they operated both family businesses with their children's help. Lee's responsibilities were primarily managing the motel but she did some behind the scenes work at the funeral home. They worked very hard and very well as a team.
Lee was also actively involved in her community. She had recently celebrated her 57th year of active service with the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, where she served in many capacities including its board of directors, its treasurer, vice president and president in 1991 and 1992. She was a devout member of the Luther Memorial Lutheran Church for over 50 years.
Lee was an avid seamstress and quilter and a member of the church's quilting group that produced hundreds of quilts and walker bags that were donated to area shelters and nursing homes. She also crocheted and quilted many blankets and afghans as gifts for family and friends. Lee was also a long time member and past president of the Mattydale-Hinsdale Chamber of Commerce. She was also a member of the VFW Post #3146 Ladies Auxiliary in Mattydale. She and Ed also enjoyed traveling in their motor home and loved their visits to Germany and Hawaii. Lee was an insatiable reader, and had a green thumb, always keeping an extensive garden until recently. She loved her family and any time spent with them.
In addition to her husband, of nearly 50 years, Ed in 1993, Lee was predeceased by her sisters Jean Zynda and Ruth Killam.
Leona is survived by her four children: Allan Krueger of Mill Valley, CA, Brad (Kris) Krueger of West Chester, PA, Ann K. Harmon Burrows of Parishville, and Howard Krueger of Cicero; six grandchildren: Peter (Keira) Harmon of NC, Melodie (Keri Costello) Harmon of RI, Lee (Jennifer) Krueger of VA, Bill Krueger of PA, Kim LaVeck of Cicero and Ken Krueger of North Syracuse; her five great grandchildren: Hunter, Jacob, Emma, Kaylyn and Lily Ann; a brother, Roy Benedict of Groton; two first cousins: Francis White and Laura Butts, both of Groton; a brother-in-law, John "Jack" Killam of Sandy Creek; two sisters-in-law: Marie Krueger of Buffalo and Marie Krueger of Poplar Ridge; and many nieces and nephews.
