Bertha Quackenbush, 92, of Liverpool, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, at Elderwood at Birchwood Health Center. A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Bertha resided on Leonard Road in Syosset, Long Island for 36 years before moving to North Syracuse in 1990. Since then she resided at West Side Manor and Elderwood at Birchwood Health Center. She was the daughter of the late Alfred C. and Mary Bieling.
Bertha graduated from Franklin Lane High School in Brooklyn. She worked as a registered nurse for more than 30 years at the former Wycloff Heights Hospital of which she was an alumnus of the Class of 1941. Most recently Bertha worked for the Hicksville Regional Post Office as a supervisory head nurse before retiring in 1987.
Bertha was predeceased by her husband, Walter, in 1983 and by her sisters, Amelia Neuendorf and Evelyn Engelke.
Surviving are two sons: James (Susan) Quackenbush of Liverpool, and John (Marie) Quackenbush of Medina, OH; her brother-in-law, Dr. Charles Engelke of Great Neck, NY and sister-in-law, Anne Leecock of Sayville, NY; a step-grandson, Jeremy; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours: 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at Krueger Funeral Home, 2619 Brewerton Road, Mattydale, with a prayer service following at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian burial: 9:45 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28 at St. Edward's Church in Syosset, NY, followed by burial in St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale.
