Phyllis Lee Clary Carender died Aug. 23, 2012, at home in Nashville, TN, after a brief illness. She was born in 1931 to Evelyn and Harold Clary. She graduated from high school in Paoli, Ind. and received a bachelor’s degree from Earlham College and a master’s degree in social work from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI.
In 1952 she was married to Havy Parker Carender, Jr. A social worker and counselor for parents of children with disabilities, Mrs. Carender worked for the Intermediate School District in Michigan, United Cerebral Palsy Agency and Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse. An avid gardener, an art lover and eager traveler, she enjoyed garden clubs, tours of museums and travel to many countries with her husband. She found great satisfaction in participating in church organizations and service, volunteering for Food Pantry, Meals on Wheels, Senior Transportation and AAUW. Her greatest joy came from entertaining her family.
Mrs. Carender is survived by her husband, Havy Parker Carender, Jr.; her daughters, Sue Garey and Melissa (Robert) Henry; grandchildren, Hannah and Jackson Garey and Claire and Abigail Henry; and brother, Harold (Marilyn) Clary. A memorial service: 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8 at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Visitation: 10 a.m. until time of the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions in Mrs. Carender’s name be made to the Youth Ministries of Westminster Presbyterian Church, 3900 West End Avenue, Nashville TN 37205.
