Joan H. Carroll, 85, of North Syracuse, died Tuesday morning at Francis House in Syracuse. Joan was a native of Whitehall, N.Y., and was the last surviving child of John and Gertrude Hoffman.
Joan graduated from Whitehall High School then attended and graduated from the Cadet Nurse Corps at Samaritan Hospital in Troy, N.Y. She worked first as an industrial nurse in Springfield, Vt. After moving to Syracuse, Joan worked for many years at St. Joseph's Hospital and Hutchings Psychiatric Center. An active volunteer, she was one the first nurses to begin assisting at Francis House. After retiring to Florida in 1992, she taught English to migrant farm workers. Joan loved gardening and spending time with her family. Joan was a longtime communicant of St. Margaret's Church in Mattydale.
She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Robert "Bob" J. Carroll, in 2002.
Surviving are her three children: Mary C. Lewis of Chittenango, Timothy J. Carroll of Syracuse, and Col. Mike J. Carroll of Washington, D.C.; six grandchildren: Geoffrey, Christopher, Douglas, Rebecca, Meghan, and Krista; three great grandchildren: Sydney, Grant, and Holden; her niece, Sharon and a nephew, Daniel.
A Mass will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Margaret's Church, 203 Roxboro Road in Mattydale. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Joan's memory may be made to Francis House, 108 Michaels Ave., Syracuse N.Y. 13208.
