Richard Mark DeLapp, 93, formerly of Elbridge, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011, in Schenectady after a brief illness. The son of Ralph and Sylvia DeLapp and brother to Robert (dec.) and William, he is survived by his wife of 30 years, Virginia L. Fordock DeLapp. He is also survived by two children, Linda F. Graves (John) of West Coxsackie, NY and David R. DeLapp (Rossane) of Ashland City, TN and one granddaughter Alison L. Warren of Schenectady.
A 1937 graduate of Elbridge High School, Dick lived most of his life in Elbridge. During WWII, he was stationed with the Army in India, China, and Burma. Upon his return home, he worked as a carpenter. In 1951, he married E. Florence Wilson (dec.) and began building the house in which he would spend the next 57 years. After his retirement in 1982, he volunteered with the church and was often seen riding his bike around town, which he did until age 88. thereafter, he preferred to walk, stopping to chat with others along the way.
Dick was a member of the Elbridge Community Church and as well as the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of American. He was also a member and past Master of the Jordan Lodge 386 F&AM.
He and Virginia enjoyed getting together with neighbors and friends, taking many trips home and abroad and to visit Virginia’s daughters and grandchildren in New Mexico. Dick truly loved his hometown and he will surely be missed.
Services will be 7:15 pm Tuesday at the Bush Funeral Home, 120 E. Main St. (Rt. 5) Elbridge with the Rev. James Stone officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Friends are invited to call 5-7pm Tuesday at the funeral home. Masonic Services will be 7pm Tuesday preceding the funeral service. Contributions may be made to the Elbridge Community Church.
