Donald "Dick" McCarthy, 69, passed away at home Oct. 16, 2011, with his family at his side. Born in Syracuse, he graduated from St. John the Baptist Academy and attended SUNY Morrisville. Known as Don at work, he retired from Marine Midland Bank in 1994 as an assistant vice president. Dick earned the nickname “Iron Man” during his years playing softball at Hopkins Rd with many of his friends from the North Side. He also coached little League for several years and was a Giants, SU football and SU basketball fan. He was a member of the Knobby Knoll summer colony in Sackets Harbor since 1974.
Dick is survived by his wife, Susan (Doty) McCarthy; a son and daughter-in-Iaw Shawn and Jayne (Dewey) McCarthy of Syracuse; a son, Joseph of Constantia; brothers and sisters-in~law Robert and Bea McCarthy of Indiana, David and Ann McCarthy of Syracuse; his grandchildren, Shawn Dryer of Syracuse, Owen and Emma McCarthy of Central Square; his sister-in-Iaw and brother-in-law, Peggy and George Coats of Weedsport; step grandchildren, Paul and Terry long and Jessica Dewey, and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, great nephews and nieces, and step-great grandchildren.
Memorial service: 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at St. John the Baptist Church, 406 Court St., Syracuse. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Central New York SPCA, 5878 E. Molloy Rd, Mattydale, NY,13211.
