Agatha Sunser

August 4, 1909 - October 5, 2011

Agatha “Ida” Sunser, 102, of Fairmount, passed away Wednesday Oct. 5, 2011, after a brief illness, with her family by her side. Born in Ali, in the province of Messina, Italy, on Wednesday Aug. 4, 1909, she was the daughter of Joseph Ponto and Madeline Fiumara Ponto. She came to the United States through Ellis Island at age 11 and lived in East Syracuse before moving to Fairmount 69 years ago.
One who lead her life by example and by the deeds she performed each day, Ida was a hard worker her entire life. In her early years, she was a seamstress at Learbury’s, raised a family, and later was employed with Sam Rao Florist for 56 years. She was affectionately known as the “Geranium Lady” and later worked every year with the holiday plants.
An avid gardener, Ida was a member of Fairmount Garden Club where she participated in many horticulture competitions at the New York State Fair. She always had a large vegetable garden, fruit trees, beloved berry bushes, and grape vines which she cared for and her family enjoyed. In her later years, she shared her plants and knowledge of them so that others could take pleasure in them. Ida especially enjoyed showing her great-grandchildren her plants and picking berries with them.
Ida enjoyed cooking, whether it was making her favorite food for others, or making sure there was always homemade soup. She was known for her homemade bread recipe and for sending a plate of her special squash fritters to work. Her family knew this was her way of showing her love and care for others.
Ida was a communicant of Holy Family Church and member of the Holy Family Seniors. She was also a member of the national and local American Italian Heritage Association and volunteered for many years with the Camillus Octagon House.
Ida was a lifetime member of the Camillus Senior Citizens and enjoyed their dinners and many trips. She enjoyed traveling, particularly to Florida with her good friend Rose, where they took daily rides and played cards every night.
Ida was predeceased by her husband, Samuel John Sunser, on April 29, 1992.
Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Donald Schmidt of Liverpool and Josephine "Joy" and Tim Flood of Fairmount; son and daughter-in-law, Carl J. and Penny of Fulton; grandchildren, Stephanie Sunser, Jason Flood (Ross Mothersell), Christopher (Liz) Schmidt and Heather (Jeffrey) Sunser-Schremp; and great-grandchildren, Nicolas and Daniel Schremp.
Relatives and friends called from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday Oct. 7 at Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus. Services were at 8:30 a.m. Saturday Oct. 8 at the funeral home and at 9 a.m. in Holy Family Church where a funeral Mass was celebrated with Rev. Richard P. Prior Jr. and Deacon Nick Alvaro officiating. Entombment was in Resurrection Chapel Mausoleum, St. Mary's Cemetery, DeWitt.
