Sr. Margaret Agnes Walsh went home to God on Sunday Oct. 2, 2011, at Jolenta Convent. She was born in Syracuse to Edmond and Lavina Schoenish Walsh. She was a Sister of St. Francis for 65 years. She received a bachelor’s degree in physical sciences from LeMoyne College and a master’s degree in secondary education from Canisius College in Buffalo.
She was an excellent educator and teacher at Assumption and Bishop Ludden high schools in Syracuse, Oswego Catholic High, St. Francis High School in Honolulu, Hawaii, and at Maria Regina College in Syracuse. She held the position of administrative assistant for Pen and Pages Tutorial Center and was office assistant in the Community Finance Office.
She will always be remembered for her many years of devoted service to her community and the hearts of those who loved her as a loyal, caring friend who endeared herself to many students and families whom she encountered. She loved sports and prayed her favorite teams to victory many times. Her kindness and mentoring to beginner teachers was invaluable.
She was pre-deceased by two brothers and a twin sister, Edmond, Francis, and Lucretia Smith. She is survived by nieces and the Sisters of St. Francis.
Mass of Christian burial: 7 p.m. Wednesday Oct. 5. at St. Anthony Convent Chapel. Calling hours: 3:30 to 6:30pm. in the St. Anthony Convent Chapel, 1024 Court St. Farewell service: 8:30 a.m. Thursday Oct. 6 at the convent chapel with internment following at Assumption Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Francis Developement Office, 1118 Court St., Syracuse, N.Y., 13208.
