Richard H. May H. May

Richard H. May, 81, of North Syracuse, passed away Thursday, Nov. 24, 2011. Dick was born on Oct. 6, 1930, and raised in Eastwood and graduated from Eastwood High in 1948. He was an accomplished runner who set city records during his high school years and went on to run for the LeMoyne College cross country/track team. He graduated from Le Moyne in 1953, later becoming their track coach, and is a member of the college's Athletic Hall of Fame. He then served in the Army during the Korean War Era.
Dick was a passionate and dedicated educator for over 50 years. He began teaching history in the Central Square School District, where he also founded their cross country and track program. He continued his career in the North Syracuse School District until his retirement in 1991. During his time there, he served as a history teacher, administrator and director of curriculum for social studies, art and music. Dick also served as an adjunct professor of history at Columbia College for over 20 years, retiring in 2008. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, the former Shirley McDonald; his children, Nancy (Bud) Krupka, Bonnie (Bob) VanBenschoten, Linda May Menkis and James R. May; his six wonderful grandchildren; and his great-grandson.
Richard was laid to rest on Monday, Nov. 28, in Assumption Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Online condolences at CarterFuneralHome.com.
