Just a few miles down the road from where they clashed a week earlier, the Skaneateles and Cazenovia girls track and field teams dueled again, only this time with the company of eight other sides as part of Monday's Onondaga High School League Liberty division championship meet at Chittenango High School.

Entering a challenging final week of the regular season, the Cicero-North Syracuse baseball team was still unblemished, at 14-0, but quite aware that its long streak could end at any time. That time arrived Monday afternoon, at Fayetteville-Manlius, where the state no. 2-ranked Northstars ran into Hornets left-hander Jack McClure and didn't get on the board in a 2-0 defeat.

As a final tune-up for the post-season, the Baldwinsville girls track and field team dominated last Saturday’s Weedsport Invitational, scoring 151 points, well clear of runner-up Living Word Academy (55 points) and the rest of the 13-team field.

Back in late April, the Cicero-North Syracuse softball team got tripped up for the only time this season, beaten by its own mistakes in a 9-2 defeat to John Jay-East Fishkill in a tournament near Binghamton. But the second time the Northstars ventured into tournament play, it turned out quite different, C-NS going 4-0 and winning last weekend’s 32nd annual Ace Morabito Memorial Tournament at Herkimer’s Muddville complex.

At least in the waning stages of the regular season, the Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool girls lacrosse teams were wed together by the common goal of trying to knock off Baldwinsville. And it was the Northstars that proved successful, going to Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium last Friday night and prevailing 13-10 in a non-league contest, avenging a 10-9 defeat to the Bees just three weeks earlier.

On the brink of the Section III Class C playoffs, the Marcellus girls lacrosse team could lay claim to a perfect mark, with one glaring exception. That would be Skaneateles, who fought past the Mustangs 14-12 in overtime on April 15 and, in last Wednesday’s rematch at Hyatt Stadium, took charge late in the first half to prevail again, this time by a more decisive 17-9 margin.

It had reached the point in the season where the West Genesee baseball team had a right to feel fatigued, having played six times in an eight-day span. But through that stretch, the Wildcats went 5-1, capped by last Monday’s strong effort at home against Utica Proctor, where it got the runs early and turned to Evan Reichel to preserve a 4-1 victory over the Raiders.

Those expectations are tempered after a pair of late-season league setbacks, starting May 2 with a 5-4 defeat to Homer and continuing with last Tuesday’s 9-1 loss to Bishop Ludden.

Many different angles could be offered in regards to the Jamesville-DeWitt boys lacrosse team’s 10-9 defeat to Niskayuna on the night of May 4. Maybe it was an indicator that the Red Rams’ state title run might not be as smooth as originally imagined. Or perhaps J-D, while aiming to beat the Silver Warriors, could let go of the outcome knowing a possible rematch in the state finals would carry far more weight.
