Right to the end of its landmark 2017 campaign, the Westhill boys golf team was perfect – or, if not perfect, then the closest thing possible to that unattainable ideal.
The Warriors beat all 16 of its regular-season opponents, beat the entire group of Class AA schools in August at the Henninger Invitational and, finally, pulled away to win Tuesday’s Section III Class B/C/D fall tournament at Marcellus Golf Club.
With a team score of 408, Westhill easily beat back the five other teams in the field, with Christian Brothers Academy getting second place at 442 and Skaneateles (457) taking third place.
What’s more, the Warriors had four of the top six individuals, including a 1-2 finish from Josh Marshall and Sean Dadey, who best figured out the wind-dried roller-coaster greens at MGC.
Marshall shot a five-over-par 77, and earned the individual championship by two strokes over Dadey, whose 79 was the only other total under 80.
Anthony Maglisco, shooting an 82, tied CBA’s Mike Santaro for third place, while Nick Sauro, with an 83, shared fifth place with Tully’s Wyatt Brown.
And it didn’t stop there. The top 11 finishers, plus ties, advanced to May’s sectional state qualifier at Seven Oaks in Hamilton, and Westhill grabbed six of those 13 spots.
To join Marshall, Dadey, Maglisco and Sauro in that field, Tim Alcaro had to shoot an 85 to tie for seventh place, while David Bleskoski, shooting an 86, shared 10th place and made the cut on the number.
