Two Fayetteville-Manlius School District student artists received top honors in the 2017 National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in grades 7 through 12.
A record-breaking 330,000 works of art and writing were submitted for adjudication at the regional level in 29 award categories, which included poetry, photography, sculpture, humor, editorial cartoons, video game design and more.
Fayetteville-Manlius High School seniors Brelyn Hatfield and Maddie Carapella both received National Medals, which means their submissions are in the top 1 percent of all submissions.
Hatfield received a National Gold Medal in the drawing and illustration category for her piece titled “Boarded Up” and a National Silver Medal in the drawing and illustration category for “Welcome.” Carapella received a National Silver Medal in the photography category for her piece, “Black Trees.”
Submissions were evaluated based on originality, technical skill and emergence of personal vision or voice.
The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards started recognizing teenagers across the country in 1923. By receiving a medal, the F-M students join a legacy of celebrated artists and authors, including Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford and Ken Burns.
