With far more depth on hand, the Skaneateles girls cross country team overcame a tremendous individual run by Altmar-Parish-Williamstown’s Brianna Karboski in last Wednesday’s meet and put together a 25-34 victory over the Rebels.
Even with Julia Willcox leading her team and posting a time of 22 minutes, 20 seconds, she was far behind Karboski, who won the race In 20:47, nearly two minutes in front of the pack.
But Willcox had far more help on hand. After APW’s Brooke Adler finished third (22:35), Maddy Brogan got fourth place in 22:46. It took a while before the rest of the runners showed up, but Chloe Metz earned fifth place in 25:23, just ahead of Georgia McSwain (25:24) in sixth place.
Hanna Atkinson and Nicole DeRosa ran together, each of them crossing the finish line in 27:18 for the eighth and ninth spots, while Catherine Carlile claimed 10th place in 28:06.
Much the same thing happened in the boys meet between Skaneateles and APW, only here the Lakers surrendered the top two spots before taking over the rest of the way and winning by a 25-49 margin.
Cambron Hornin won for the Rebels in 19:26 and Riley Houd was second (20:43), but the Skaneateles takeover started with J.W. Simmons and Calvin Blackwell, each of whom finished in 21:17, just ahead of Ben Kringer, who was fifth in 21:18.
It was Tyler Lewis, finishing sixth in 21:45, and Nick Paciorek, a second behind (21:46) in sixth place, that helped clinch the Laker victory, with Tony DiRubbo (22:20) and Ben Blackwell (22:31) getting eighth and ninth place, respectively.
