The Liverpool Is The Place Committee never fails to book a wide variety of musicians, singers and bands for its 24 free concerts presented on Monday and Wednesday evenings every summer at Johnson Park.
This year, its 29th, the committee has hired several bands which have never before entertained at Johnson Park, including the Pale Green Stars, Fulton Chain Gang, Black Water Blues Band, Papa Joe Band, the Easy Ramblers, Frostbit Blue and the Carolyn Kelly Blues Band (see 2014 schedule side-bar).
An exciting African-styled marimba combo, Kambuyu, will also make its Johnson Park debut on July 23.
For the second year in a row the schedule includes a short stage play, an adaptation of the Elizabethan comedy “As You Like It” on June 18, as performed by the Redhouse Traveling Shakespeare troupe.
Every summer, scores of Liverpool musicians strut their stuff at the amphitheater. Student musicians from the Liverpool Central School District will launch the season at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 2. The Liverpool Community Chorus, under the direction of John Miller, takes the stage on June 11, and the Liverpool Concert Band, under the direction of Vince Iarossi, play patriotic tunes June 30.
Other returning performers include the Joe Whiting Band, Fritz’s Polka Band, the Mario DeSantis Orchestra, Southern Comfort, Merry Mischief, Larry Hoyt and Liverpool’s own Christopher Ames Band.
Former LITP Program Director Mike Casale, who died Feb. 16, will be remembered at the Aug. 13 Smokin’ concert.
The summer concerts are sponsored by area corporations, businesses, service providers and retailers.
Performances take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at Johnson Park, at the corner of Oswego and Vine streets. In case of rain, the concerts will be cancelled.
