— The Syracuse VA Medical Center held an annual awards ceremony on April 11 to recognize the more than 1,200 volunteers who donated their time and talents to assist veterans and family members during the first half this year. “Celebrate Service” is the theme of this year’s National Volunteer Week.

Magdeleine Wellner, of Jamesville, was named Volunteer of the Year during the event. Wellner was recognized for her eagerness to help others for going beyond the call of duty to help make a difference in the lives of the veterans patients and their families. So far this year, volunteers at the VA have logged more than 41,000 hours of service at the Medical Center.

James Cody, the medical center director was on hand to congratulate and thank the volunteers.

“It is extremely important that we recognize and celebrate the service of our volunteers, not only today, but each and every day. I want to extend my deepest thanks for the work they do all year long to make the VA Medical Center a warm, welcome and inviting place for our veterans and their families,” Cody said.
