Grimes baseball stays unbeaten, moves to 7-0

CBA sweeps Bishop Ludden by combined 23-3 margin

Once all the rain let up, the Bishop Grimes baseball team won twice on the weekend in wildly different manners, improving to 7-0 on the season.

To start with, the Cobras, who has made it into the state Class C top five, smashed past LaFayette 25-1 on an overcast Friday afternoon, building upon a 3-0 first-inning lead with nine runs in the bottom of the second, and then adding seven runs in the fourth and six runs in the sixth.

Wyatt Myers hit the only home run and finished with three RBIs, while Tom Steinberg went three-for-four, scoring three times and earning five RBIs. Six others – Joe Arrigo, Nick Commisso, David Hatch, Austin DeRienzo, Nate Moore and Jim Perra – drove in two runs apiece.

Fun as that was, the Cobras would find Saturday’s game with Fabius-Pompey to be equally as tense, but with Chris Schad doing great work on the mound and at the plate, Grimes was able to squeak past the Falcons 2-1.

Schad and F-P’s Chris Wagner engaged in a tense pitcher’s duel that stayed 0-0 until the bottom of the third, when Grimes struck for both of its runs. Steinberg singled home DeRienzo, and then raced to the plate when Schad doubled.

Having helped create his own 2-0 edge, Schad maintained it until the fifth, when Mitch Devine’s double led to F-P’s lone run. But Schad blanked the Falcons the rest of the way, amassing 11 strikeouts while giving up just five hits and one walk.

As other teams rested last Monday despite the rare good weather, Christian Brothers Academy paid a visit to “Holy War” rival Bishop Ludden and turned up the offense, again reaching double digits as it smashed the Gaelic Knights 15-2.

A five-run second inning got the Brothers in front, and it just kept going from there, CBA steadily gaining a 9-2 lead and then using six runs in the top of the sixth to put it away.
