ESM technology teacher wins TACNY Outstanding Teacher award

— When McCarthy arrived on campus at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications, he discovered he was far ahead of his fellow students because of the education he gained from Ferris. “I had more experience than many, and it wasn’t until I was a few years into the program before they started teaching many of the things that Ferris had already taught me,” McCarthy wrote. “I was well ahead of the curve of my class in terms of making great programming.”

It is, perhaps, the letter from high school Principal Grenardo L. Avellino that sums it up best, noting that Ferris’ energy and love of learning has been a catalyst for interdisciplinary initiatives and has revitalized both the technology and television production programs. “This all occurred because of the dream and commitment of one remarkable individual, Michael Ferris,” Avellino wrote. “Mike not only teaches technology, organizes events and engages others to get involved; Mike changes lives. He inspires our students and our staff to be life-long learners and is truly a teacher extraordinaire.”

Michael Ferris is one of three Onondaga County teachers who will be honored at TACNY’s 26th annual Outstanding Teacher Awards Banquet, slated to start at 6 p.m. Friday, May 2, at Barbagallo’s Restaurant, 6344 E. Molloy Road, East Syracuse. The other winners are Susanne Bang, a library media specialist at LaFayette Junior-Senior High School, and Matthew Harbinger, a mathematics and computer science teacher at Cicero-North Syracuse High School. Each teacher will receive a plaque and a check for $1,000.

Current and former students, colleagues, friends and family of the winners as well as past winners and the public are invited to honor these teachers at the TACNY Outstanding Teacher Awards Banquet. A cash bar will be available at 6 p.m., with the meal starting at 7 p.m. A ceremony honoring the teachers will follow. Tickets range from $12 for students in kindergarten through 12th grade to $24 for an adult meal of New York strip steak, and be purchased online at www.tacny.org. You can also make a reservation online and pay by check payable to TACNY Teacher’s Banquet at the door. The deadline to make a reservation is April 24.
