Observe buy local week

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

To the editor:

Dear friends and neighbors,

The Greater Cazenovia Area Chamber of Commerce has designated the upcoming week of May 4 through 10 as “Buy Local Week.” I would like to encourage everyone to make a special effort to get out and support our local businesses in honor of the event!

There are countless reasons to do so but one of the most important is that it helps your local governments to keep your property taxes low. Every dollar of revenue we are able to collect via our portion of the state/county sales tax is one less dollar that needs to be raised through property taxes. The Village of Cazenovia has projected that 22% of our revenue for the upcoming fiscal year will be from local sales taxes. The power of buying local is that each of us can make our own spending choices and drive that percentage even higher.

Sales taxes are based on the county where spending occurs, so even if you cannot find a specific product here in the village, think about where it might be available in Madison County. Obviously major purchases like cars and appliances can have a powerful impact on revenue, so looking for local and Madison County options with those items is critical.

Of course, there are many other reasons to shop right here in Cazenovia. Our local merchants are our friends and neighbors. They are always there for us when we ask for their support and the success of their businesses helps keep our business district vital and attractive. Buying locally also shortens your drive, reduces stress and offers a pleasant shopping experience.

The kick-off to Buy Local Week will be held this Sunday, May 4 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm with a Champagne Tea and Fashion Show at the Lincklaen House. Tickets are available in advance at the Chamber, Cazenovia Artisans or Blushing Rose Boutique and at the door.

Thank you for your support of our local businesses and our community!
