Buy local week starts May 4

EDITORIAL

The first annual “Buy Madison Week” runs May 4 through 11, and we would be remiss if we did not take this opportunity to encourage our readers to make sure they are cognizant of where they shop next week.

“Buying local” is more than just some snappy catch phrase or impersonal sales ploy to be shrugged off or ignored. When you spend your money in Madison County — whether it is for major purchases like cars, necessary purchases like groceries or a casual luxury like coffee or books, every dollar spent in our county stays in and brings a return to our local and county community. Spending money with local businesses improves those businesses — often run by our family, friends or neighbors — and it generates sales tax revenue for Madison County and its municipalities — a tax revenue that county municipalities get returned to them at the end of every fiscal year.

But, perhaps even more than that, local shops offer many quality, unique and interesting items that you just can’t get at chain stores on Erie Boulevard. Think about the items you want or need to purchase and then consider where you can find them locally. Certainly not everything everybody wants is available on Albany Street, but other county municipalities like Hamilton and Oneida offer many goods and services that we may not have here in Caz.

Next week’s buy local week also includes local Cazenovia events such as the GCADD Poker Walk from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 4, and the Cazenovia Champagne, Tea and Fashion Show at 4 p.m. on May 4 at the Lincklaen House. Many businesses are also participating in a special program where if you ask for a scratch-off ticket for your chance to win 1 of 15 gift cards to local businesses.

The first annual “Buy Madison Week” was created through a coordinated effort of Madison County, Madison County Tourism and chamber offices from Cazenovia, Hamilton and Oneida. We applaud them for their efforts and support them whole-heartedly. So don’t forget to buy local next week — and every week!
