Cazenovia This week will begin the next stage of the assessment update project being conducted by Town Assessor Brian Fitts.
Back in July, data mailers were sent out to residential property owners asking them to verify or update the information on the assessor’s file. The response was great. Since then, the assessor has reviewed this information along with recent sales to create new preliminary assessments for every parcel in the town and the village. These preliminary assessments will be received in the mail by property owners by the end of this week.
The preliminary assessments will be in the form of a disclosure statement. The disclosure statement will give the property owner an estimate on how their taxes will be affected by the preliminary assessment. Keep in mind, this is an estimate, which is based on taking the new assessments and applying them to last year’s levies. The preliminary assessment should be an indication of the market value of your property.
Property owners will be given the opportunity to discuss their assessment with the assessor in an informal meeting. Informal meetings will be held at the town offices for the rest of March and most of April. These meetings will be by appointment only.
