Republicans hold nominating convention

Katko Tapped to Challenge Maffei for 24th Congressional District

— Representatives of the Republican Party for the counties of Wayne, Oswego, Cayuga and Onondaga met Saturday, March 1 to identify candidates for the fall elections. Of the eight announced candidates for Congress, seven were present and each was given five minutes to address the gathering prior to the vote. At the start of the convention, County of Onondaga Republican Chair Tom Dadey announced that Jane Rossi, the eighth candidate, had withdrawn from consideration citing health issues of a close family member. We wish her and her family all the best in this difficult time.

As committee members, we were charged with picking the most viable amongst the group. Not only who will appeal to Republican voters and Conservative voters, but who will represent fairly the interests of all citizens of the 24th Congressional District. The selection was based upon times and circumstances. The committee members nominated former federal attorney John Katko to challenge the present congressman. John Katko has the strength of character to do what is right, not just for those who voted for him, but for all constituents in the 24th Congressional District.

In other races, Gene Conway, police chief of DeWitt has been selected as the Republican designee for Sheriff. Senator John DeFransico has accepted the candidacy for the NY state senate race. Gary Finch will run for the 125th Assembly seat, Rob DeMarco is the nominee for the 127th Assembly seat, Will Barclay will seek re-election for the 120th District and Rick Zaccaria will represent the Republican Party for the 129th Assembly District. Chairman Dadey stated that two races are yet to be settled for candidates; challengers will be named shortly for the seats of Sen. Dave Valesky and Assemblyman Sam Roberts.

All too often, people conclude that when one is chosen as worthy, that the others are deemed unworthy. This is not the case. Each is valuable and necessary. There were no unworthy persons vying for this seat from our party. The selection process was difficult with so much talent and strength. We are grateful to all those offering their services, whether for the congressional seat of other offices.
