B’ville Lions Club to hold ‘White Cane Day’

To the editor:

The purpose of “White Cane Day” is to call attention to some of the international and local sight activities that Lions do to help improve sight and help to prevent and cure blindness. It is also to request small donations to help Lions continue these works.

Since 1925, when Helen Keller challenged Lions Clubs International to be “knights of the blind,” Lions have saved and preserved sight.

Through the initiatives of the LCI Foundation, 31 million people had their sight saved or vision improved in 2011. Cataract surgeries restored sight to 7.84 million people.

Lions helped to provide more than 153 million treatments for river blindness. This affliction has almost been totally eliminated in six Latin American countries. Efforts need to be maintained there and also directed to other countries.

Lions helped protect 157 million children from measles in 2012. Hundreds of children die from this disease each day. Blindness is a devastating complication from this disease.

More than 17 million vision screenings for children were completed through LCIF’s “Sight for Kids.”

The Baldwinsville Lions Club also has its own sight activities. Eyeglasses are provided for needy school children. The local Lions also participate in the screening of children for amblyopia (lazy eye).

Leader Dogs for the Blind, in Michigan, is strongly supported by many Lions clubs. More than 14,000 leader dogs have been trained. Lions also support other service dog groups.

The Baldwinsville Lions collect used eyeglasses from five receptacles in the local area. Many clubs around the world do this. Millions of used eyeglasses are processed each year for use in third world countries.

The Baldwinsville Lions will be conducting “White Cane Day” at several sites during the month of June. Many thanks to Key Bank, Kinney Drugs and M&T Bank for allowing us to be there. The Baldwinsville Lions really appreciate the generous support the community has given in the past and look forward to its continuing support.
