To the editor:
We are sick at the loss of our beautiful barns, built so long ago and so well by neighbors helping neighbors. That same spirit was evident yesterday as ten volunteer fire companies came to aid us. CAVAC and local police and fire department auxiliaries all worked together to save our house.
A well-oiled machine was rolling. These men and women deserve the thanks of all of us because they literally risk their lives to help their neighbors. Firefighting is hard, dirty, dangerous work. Not everyone is capable of doing that, so all the more reason to support them in small ways.
We had to call them back at 3:30 AM when the hoped-for rain didn't materialize, but the wind persisted and the fire flared up again. They turned out, cheerful, and were again back in the morning to check on things.
Never can we thank them enough. Nor can you.
