Liverpool Caregiving for someone with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia is the ultimate test of human endurance. In addition to personal, work, and other family responsibilities, caregivers are on-call 24 hours a day to keep their loved one safe and healthy. Feelings of worry, anxiety and guilt are constantly stirred. Often times, personal needs like rest and wellness are set aside so that all of their attention can be focused on the person with the disease.
The Alzheimer’s Association, Central New York Chapter will hold its second annual Indoor Warrior Triathlon on April 6 at Gold’s Gym, Liverpool, in honor of the 1 million caregivers in New York state and 15.4 million caregivers nationwide. Athlete registration is now open at alz.org/cny.
“In New York state alone, there are 320,000 people living with a form of dementia and an additional 1,003,000 providing unpaid care,” said Catherine James, chief executive officer for the Alzheimer’s Association, Central New York Chapter. “For every person diagnosed, there are three other lives that this disease disrupts. The Indoor Warrior Triathlon celebrates and honors their sacrifice and the stamina required to provide quality care to a person with a dementia like Alzheimer’s.”
The Indoor Warrior Triathlon is Syracuse’s only indoor triathlon and the only such event in the nation conducted by an Alzheimer’s Association chapter. It is an all-ages, all-abilities event open to the first 100 entrants at alz.org/cny. The $60 entry fee includes an athlete gift, participation award and a training program — including workout and dietary suggestions — designed by Gold’s Gym.
Indoor triathlons take a different format than traditional outdoor timed run/bike/swim events. Participants in the Indoor Warrior Triathlon will have 10 minutes to swim, 30 minutes to bike and 20 minutes to run as far as they can. A seven-minute transition period between each event allows athletes to prepare for the next discipline. Overall event, gender and age-group standings will be based on the total combined miles accumulated from each discipline. Additionally, participants can use the event website to create websites and email their friends, family and co-workers to fundraise for the cause. The top fundraisers will also be recognized at the event.
