More than 1,000 take to the streets for the Chilly Chili 5K

— More than 1,000 runners, walkers and their families and friends will be gathering on the streets of Cazenovia for the Chilly Chili 5K on Sunday, Jan. 26. Participants come from all over Upstate New York, neighboring states and Canada. The race has grown in popularity from the first year when 354 hearty runners started in front of the fire station and finished on Lincklaen Street.

Cazenovia Jewelry has presented the event each year to benefit Cazenovia Children’s House and AmeriCU is the principal sponsor.

In its 10th year, the Chilly Chili race course starts and finishes in front of Cazenovia Middle School and winds through the downtown and residential streets of town.

“The cheering, music, costumes and signs from neighbors along the route add to the excitement. Cazenovians know how to welcome visitors and the runners appreciate it,” said Penny Noll, Cazenovia Children’s House director. The race starts at 1 p.m. and last year’s male and female winners ran the 3.1 miles in 15:51 (15:51) and 18:30 (5:58) which were the new course records.

After the race, the activity for registered participants moves to Cazenovia College’s Stephen M. Schneeweiss Athletic Complex for the Chili Cook-off Party and awards ceremony. There will be samples of chili, beer and nonalcoholic beverages from 18 area restaurants and breweries. Participants can vote for their favorite chili for “The People’s Choice Award” while listening to live music.
