LETTER: Thank you, Dale Bates

Dear Skaneateles Community,

This is a letter of celebration, tribute and congratulations to my friend, Dale Bates, who has served the Skaneateles community and students for approximately 30 years as Assistant Superintendent, of Business and Finance and District Clerk. Over my career, I have rarely, if ever, met a more caring, competent and committed leader. While Superintendent of DeRuyter, I had the distinct privilege of working with Dale when he was the first shared Business Manager for DeRuyter, Cincinnatus and McGraw School Districts. He handled this incredibly complex position as business manager for three districts with equanimity, skill and integrity. In 1984, I asked Dale to join the Skaneateles School District and he successfully worked tirelessly, until his impending retirement on Feb. 27 of this year.

In addition to his challenging positions, Dale has been extraordinarily active in his church community giving generously of his time building homes and volunteering. During the past number of years, Dale has served as the elected town supervisor of Cincinnatus. His character and integrity are the hallmarks of his life and work as a school district leader, a community volunteer and person. His quiet approach and caring attitude creates confidence and loyalty among colleagues and friends alike. The

Skaneateles community was indeed fortunate and blessed to have such a dedicated and respected business leader for 30 years. Although his daily focus was budgets and numbers, his main interest was always on how the numbers impacted the quality of education for the students in Skaneateles — what is best for the students. I wish Dale the best in his retirement as he spends time with his wife Becky and family and I know that Dale will continue to impact the lives of others through the goodness and kindness that is his core.

Walter J. Sullivan

SCS Superintendent 1983-2005
