Cicero LETTER: Fire department disappointed with vote results
To the editor:
On Tuesday, Feb. 18, the Cicero Fire District held a referendum vote at Cicero Fire Station No. 1 from to approve the construction of a new fire station.
As a result of a few residents residing in the Cicero Fire District they decided to use the difference in fire district verse fire protection tax rates as a bargaining chip to encourage those residents of the Cicero Fire District to vote no.
As a result, this information was sent to the media outlets and the vote was defeated 184 (no) to 80 (yes).
The Cicero Fire District would like to let the residents in the Cicero Fire District and Protection District know that we have no control over the protection district tax rates, and the responsibility of increasing or bring these two different rates closer rest solely with the Cicero Town Board.
In closing, the Board of Fire Commissioners understands the importance of providing the safest facilities and equipment to protect the men and women of the Cicero Fire Department who provide fire and EMS service to the residents of the Cicero Fire and Protection Districts on a daily basis.
As a result of knowing these associated risks with the current building and face our members, the Board of Fire Commissioners have no choice but to move forward asking the residents of the Cicero Fire District to reconsider supporting this project.
