— In order to determine the cause of a serious car crash, the officers need to recreate the accident using special equipment. And to do that, the accident investigation team uses a laser measuring device to plot distances which can be viewed in 3-D using special computer software.

And finally, they will also share the services of a Manlius mechanic who is certified to conduct New York state inspections and often times assists with the inspection of vehicles that are the subject of the investigations.

Collaboration is nothing new for these departments –in the past, DeWitt has hosted nearby agencies like Manlius and East Syracuse for defensive driving and tactical team training at its facility and shared equipment as well.

“By and large, all of the police departments in this county get along very, very well,” Conway said. “We’re all members of an association of county police chiefs and a lot of what we do can happen as a result of discussions that come up at those meetings. And that’s a good thing, because in a lot of other areas of the country, you don’t have that situation. I think having it here, we’re kind of bewildered when we find out that it’s not that way in other places, in terms of police agencies getting along.”
