Quinlan, Broddus, Honis among sectional winners

F-M wins twice; CBA/J-D places fifth among Division I teams

— Up at 170 pounds, F-M’s Tim Byrnes made his way to the finals, beating CBA/J-D’s George Kassis in a technical fall and pinning Carthage’s Bryce Reed in the semifinals in 3:30, only to run into Indian River’s Sonny McPherson in the finals and take an 11-2 defeat.

All told, CBA/J-D had three runner-up finishes as it claimed fifth place in the team standings. Matt Griffin, at 99 pounds, was one of them, pinning Brian Burdick (Whitesboro) and Marcelino Aponte (Carthage) in 4:12, but running into New Hartford’s Kelan McKenna and taking a first-period fall.

Mark Friske was the no. 2 seed at 182 pounds, and he pinned Noah Gates (Fulton) in 4:29 and Landon Slawson (Whitesboro) in 2:28, only to run into Baldwinsville’s Gunnar Sutphen in the finals and, despite an all-out effort, took a 6-2 defeat.

Also for CBA/J-D, Cole Murphy was fourth at 126 pounds, falling in the semifinals to eventual champion Nick Toutant (Indian River), as teammate Arsen Bagiryan was sixth in that same weight class. David Sayre lost in the 220-pound quarterfinals to B’ville’s Joe Nasoni.

Luke Rufo gave the Hornets a sixth-place finish at 138 pounds, where CBA/J-D’s Jake Wright lost in the quarterfinals. Will Khallil (106 pounds) fell in the quarterfinals to top seed Tucker Amato (Indian River) with a second-period pin. Ben Nosovitch (99) lost in the opening round.

East Syracuse-Minoa’s Alex Moss, at 170 pounds, lost quarterfinals, but beat CBA/J-D’s George Kassis 4-3 in the consolation bracket, and also topped James Bailey (Fulton) 3-0 on his way to a fourth-place finish. Jeff Loder lost in the opening round at 132, where Quinlan prevailed.
