Syracuse goaltender Sam Walsh (28) dives to make a save in overtime in front of teammate Sean Eccles (3) in last Thursday’s Section III Division I playoff opener against Baldwinsville. Walsh recorded 28 saves in the 2-1, triple-overtime Cougars’ victory over the Bees.

— Not that the Cougars were entirely on the attack. B’ville had its fair share of chance, both in regulation and in the OT periods, but could not get anything more past Walsh, who picked up 28 saves.

A second OT followed the first, and again neither side budged from 1-1. But early in the third extra period, Thompson got his chance and did not miss.

And this sends the Cougars into Tuesday night’s Division I semifinal at Kennedy Arena, where it would face Rome Free Academy, who knocked off Fayetteville-Manlius 4-1 in its opening-round game and beat Syracuse 3-2 in double overtime on that same Kennedy ice on Jan. 10.

A win here would mean a trip to Utica Memorial Auditorium for Saturday’s sectional title game against West Genesee or Watertown IHC.
