Community should oppose possible abolition of selection classification program

It is also irresponsible to pass a generic policy for all sports. In wrestling, for example, many schools roster seventh- or an eighth-grader in the lightest weight class because there aren’t any freshman at that position. But if you don’t have someone in that slot, the other team automatically gets six points.

Cazenovia is already losing excellent students because they think (and are often wrong) that private schools are better academically and athletically. If the board bars 13- and 14 year-olds from playing at the high school level, expect to see more kids here enroll at CBA or Manlius Pebble Hill in the years to come.

I do think this issue needs to be discussed on a sport-by-sport basis in which the standards for an exceptional athlete should clearly be defined. But instead of being influenced by angry parents, the board should ultimately leave this decision to the folks who know best — coaches and the athletic director.
