Cazenovia police chief offers home burglary prevention tips

— Due to a single recent burglary in the village, Chief Hayes is releasing the following tips:

If you are going to be leaving your home for any extended period, a long weekend or a winter home in a warmer climate, makes sure all windows and doors are locked. Leave at least two lights on such as the living room and master bedroom areas. Put those lights on timers to go on and off to give the appearance that someone is home.

Make sure your mail and newspaper delivery is forwarded or stopped and that someone picks up any fuel delivery bills left on a door. If possible, have someone check the residence during your absence.

Lastly contact your local police agency and notify them of your plans. The Cazenovia Police will conduct house checks for village residents while you are away. The village web site has a downloadable house check form that you can drop off or mail to the Cazenovia Police Department. Please make sure those forms are as complete and legible as possible.

As always Chief Hayes encourages all residents to call the police department if they have any questions.
