Local spinners and fiber artists to compete in state fair

— The Cherry Valley Country Spinners and Fiber Artists of Cazenovia will be competing at the New York State Fair this year in the annual Sheep-to-Shawl contest.

On Sunday, Aug. 31, five teams of five members each, all from New York state, will prepare, spin, ply and weave a whole sheep's fleece into a full length shawl in the space of four-and-a-half hours. Shearing the sheep right before the start of the competition is optional, but gains extra points with the judges.

This event is free to all spectators at the Fair that day and begins in the Wool Center building (between the sheep and horse barns) at noon and ends at 4:30 p.m. with the display of all shawls. Some team shawls will be available for purchase at the conclusion of the event.

The Cherry Valley team consists of Gordon and Stephanie Fesenger, Marguerite Hickernell, Joan Peters and Jayshri Prasad.

The group typically meets from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. the second Thursday of every month at the Cazenovia Public Library. For more information, contact the cherryvalleyspinners@gmail.com.
