The town of Van Buren is holding a special election to discontinue the town’s sponsorship of the Baldwinsille Volunteer Fire Department’s Length of Service Award Program (LOSAP), a retirement plan for firefighters. All registered voters in the town are eligible to vote. This election is being held at the request of the Baldwinsville Volunteer Fire Department due to its merger with the Lysander Fire District in June 2013. The new fire district has now created a new LOSAP program for the merged departments. Since the town of Van Buren’s program is no longer necessary, it can be discontinued, but only by special election — the same way it was created in 2003. “Assuming the vote is positive to discontinue the LOSAP for Baldwinsville, it will automatically terminate with the vote and Baldwinsville will then be covered by a replacement LOSAP program via the new North West Fire District,” said Supervisor Claude Sykes. The special election will take place from noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 3 at Van Buren Town Hall, 7575 Van Buren Road in Baldwinsville.
