Though not on the same kind of hot streak that propelled them to a state title one season ago, the CBA/Jamesville-DeWitt ice hockey team still had time to make things special this winter. But the Brothers needed a big win, and went after it last Saturday at Onondaga Nation Arena against Division II American Conference leader Skaneateles. Having lost to the Lakers 3-2 at Allyn Arena on Dec. 17, CBA/J-D knew it could stay close, but its offense again disappeared and, by the time it emerged, it proved too late as, again, Skaneateles came out on top, this time by a 3-1 margin. Skaneateles scored once in each of the first two periods and kept CBA/J-D (7-7-4) off the board, too, gaining a 2-0 lead. Though Lucas Relkin would score in the third period to break up the possible Laker shutout as Pete Dziergas and Braeden Doust earned assist, it was all that the Brothers could manage. Owen Kuhns got two of the three Skaneateles goals, and Raymond Falso earned the other, assisting on one of Kuhns’ tallies. Patrick Major chimed in with a pair of assists. Jarrett McDonald was superb in goal, stopping 20 of the 21 shots he faced, while Tim Decker’s 30-save effort was wasted. This followed last Thursday night’s 7-1 rout of Cortland-Homer, a game where the Golden Eagles were tied with the Brothers, 1-1, through one period before CBA/J-D poured it on with six unanswered goals, three in both the second and third periods. At the heart of the surge, Ryan Durkin notched a three-goal hat trick, adding a pair of assists. Sam Mueller had a goal and three assists as Kane Alletzhauser, Gavin Gray and Connor Flannagan got one goal apiece. Doust, Ryan McKee, Ryan McGuire, Grayson Burns and Kyle Barker each had one assist. Meanwhile, Fayetteville-Manlius, trying to finish the regular season on a strong note, saw last Monday’s game with Cazenovia postponed – but when it got made up two nights later at Cicero Twin Rinks, the Hornets started fast and, led by Darren Dunewold’s hat trick, skated past the Lakers 5-2. By the time the first period was done, Dunewold was on the board and the Hornets enjoyed a 3-1 lead. F-M made it 4-1 in the second, getting solid work in goal from Kwame Morris, who stopped 17 of the 19 shots he faced. Dunewold didn’t stop until he had picked up three goals and added an assist. Often, his passes came from Ryan Daly, who earned three assists as he joined Tommy Ryu with single goals. Ryu, Tyler Tracy and Julie Hockenberger each had one assist. In a non-league game Friday night, Dunnewold carried F-M past Oswego 3-2, matching goals with the Buccaneers in each of the first two periods and then netting the game-winner in the final period. Napierala helped, too, stopping 42 of the 44 shots he faced as Daly, Jake Dumond and Tom Guilfoil each got one assist. A night later, F-M lost to the Syracuse Cougars 4-1. Trailing 1-0 in the second period, the Hornets tied it on Daly’s goal, assisted by Tyler Tracy and Erik Badger, but the Cougars got three unanswered goals in the final period to overcome Napierala’s 40 saves as Collin Thompson led the Syracuse charge, scoring twice.
